Poly-Play is a unique arcade game released in East Germany in 1989 by VEB Polytechnik Karl-Marx-Stadt. The machine offered players a selection of ten distinct games within a single cabinet, providing a varied and surprising experience rarely seen elsewhere. Controlling the action with an eight-way joystick and a single button, players could choose from titles like "Hase und Wolf," a chase game reminiscent of Pac-Man, or “Hirschjagd,” which shares elements with Robotron 2084. Other included games encompassed racing, shooting galleries, memory challenges, and even a diving simulation. The unusual nature of Poly-Play stemmed from its origins within the German Democratic Republic; it was one of the few arcade machines officially approved for production there, frequently found in holiday resorts and youth hostels. The game’s technical specifications include a custom sound chip working alongside an U880 processor—compatible with Zilog Z80—and delivered graphics at a resolution of 512x256 pixels using an eight-color palette. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, all existing Poly-Play machines were unexpectedly recalled and dismantled, contributing to their rarity today. Estimated production numbers suggest around one thousand to fifteen hundred units were manufactured, with later versions offering access to all ten programmed games within the system’s ROM.
