Gameplay

Take command of a Polaris class nuclear submarine in this engaging shooter from Taito, released in 1980. Players assume the role of Commander tasked with defending against enemy forces during a declared war. The gameplay unfolds on a single screen as you face relentless waves of attacking aircraft – fighter jets and bi-planes equipped with missiles – alongside enemy submarines and destroyers. Successfully protecting your nation requires careful navigation and precise targeting, as underwater mines and depth charges create additional hazards within the battlefield. Using an eight-way joystick to maneuver and a single fire button to retaliate, two players can cooperate in this challenging defense mission. Polaris shares some recognizable elements with Taito’s earlier hit, Space Invaders, but delivers its own unique submarine warfare experience. The game was released in various cabinet configurations including trimline and cocktail models, the latter known as "T.T Polaris" in Japan.
