Pochi and Nyaa (Ver 2.02)
Aiky / Taito • 2003

Aiky and Taito’s Pochi and Nyaa (Ver 2.02) is a charming puzzle game released in 2003 for arcade platforms. Players strategically manipulate falling blocks of different colors to create matching chains, similar to the gameplay found in Puyo Puyo Fever. The game offers several modes including a single-player story mode where players aim to build longer chains and extend their playtime, and a versus computer mode that progresses through a narrative involving a novice wizard seeking pudding. The two-player versus mode pits players against each other in a competitive battle of chain reactions; the first player to win two rounds is declared the victor. A brief tutorial guides new players through the basic mechanics regardless of which game mode they choose. Pochi and Nyaa runs on SNK’s Neo-Geo MVS hardware, utilizing an eight-way joystick and three buttons to control block rotation and type changes. The title itself is a playful pun referencing the sounds associated with dogs ("pochi") and cats ("nyaa"), and also alluding to the quick button presses required for skillful play.
