Pit Fighter (rev 9)
Atari Games • 1990

Pit Fighter throws up to three players into a brutal arena brawl against waves of digitized opponents. Players select from a roster of fighters and battle through successive rounds of street toughs, often utilizing found weapons like knives and chains to gain an advantage. Crowd interference adds another layer of chaos as spectators get involved in the action. A "Grudge Match" mode allows players to directly compete against each other after completing the initial stages. The game's dedicated cabinet version offered a unique visual experience with dynamic camera angles, zooming in on the intense combat. Pit Fighter was notable for its early use of digitized character sprites, preceding later fighting games by several years. While innovative for its time, gameplay proved somewhat flawed, and many dedicated cabinets were later converted to house other arcade titles.
