Pipi & Bibis / Whoopee!! (Z80 sound cpu, set 1)
Toaplan • 1991

In Pipi & Bibis / Whoopee!!, two players team up to infiltrate buildings and plant time bombs on computer terminals. The objective is to strategically place a final bomb, then quickly navigate the level’s layout to reach the exit before an explosive chain reaction begins. Levels are populated with patrolling scientists and security agents who must be avoided or temporarily stunned using a specialized weapon. Holding the stun beam on an enemy for a longer duration will cause them to fall from the screen. Players progress through increasingly complex environments, facing new challenges and hazards as they complete each level. A cartoon image is revealed incrementally throughout the game; completing every four stages unveils the full picture. The game utilizes a Motorola 68000 processor alongside a Zilog Z80 sound chip to deliver its gameplay experience. Originally released in Japan under the title Whoopee!!, this platformer offers cooperative action with an unusual visual element, and is controlled using an eight-way joystick and two buttons. A hidden function allows pausing and restarting play when certain settings are engaged.
