Penguin Brothers (Japan)

Also known as: Hong Tian Lei

Penguin Brothers is a cooperative or competitive platform game for two players, released in 2000 by Subsino. Players control penguins who navigate stages filled with enemies using bombs to clear obstacles and defeat opponents. Successfully eliminating all on-screen foes triggers the appearance of a key that must be carried to a silver doorway to advance to the next section of the level, creating a gameplay loop reminiscent of Bubble Bobble and Bomber Man. The game features rotating platforms allowing players to reach different areas by adhering to their undersides and manipulating their rotation. Bombs are central to both offense and navigation; however, careless detonation can harm the penguins themselves or each other. Hidden bonuses often appear when barrels are destroyed, adding another layer of exploration to each stage. Utilizing a Motorola 68000 processor and an X1-010 sound chip, Penguin Brothers offers a vibrant visual style and engaging gameplay experience centered on strategic bomb placement and platforming challenges for two players simultaneously. A modified version of the game exists under the title "Super Panda."
