Puzzle Bobble 3 (Ver 2.1O 1996/09/27)
Taito Corporation • 1996

Puzzle Bobble 3 challenges players to strategically eliminate colorful bubbles from the screen by matching them. Using an eight-way joystick, you shoot new bubbles at a rising cluster of existing ones; when three or more bubbles of the same color connect, they pop and any connected bubbles fall away. Up to four players can compete simultaneously in this addictive puzzle game, each vying for the highest score. This installment introduces several unique playable characters, including nods to other popular games—a character inspired by "Real Puncher" and a fighter reminiscent of Capcom's Ryu, complete with signature moves and a hidden Taito logo on his back when victorious. The game also includes quirky programming safeguards, such as preventing certain letter combinations from appearing in high score names. Beyond the core gameplay, discovering secrets and alternate stage layouts can be achieved through specific button sequences at the title screen, adding an extra layer of challenge for dedicated players. A soundtrack by Zuntata accompanies the bubble-popping action, further enhancing the experience.
