Puzzle Bobble (Japan, B-System)
Taito Corporation • 1994
Also known as: Bubble Buster

Players compete to clear colorful bubble formations clustered at the top of the screen in this engaging puzzle game. Using an onscreen cannon, players launch bubbles with adjustable trajectories, aiming to match colors and create chains that cause them to disappear. As play progresses, the ceiling of the arena descends, increasing the challenge and requiring quick thinking to avoid being overwhelmed. A two-player versus mode pits players against each other, transferring cleared bubbles to their opponent’s field for added strategic depth. Featuring characters from Taito's earlier Bubble Bobble series hidden within the bubbles, this accessible game proved popular with a broad audience upon its 1994 release and launched a long-running franchise.
