Universal’s Space Panic, released in 1980, is an early example of the platform game genre and introduces a unique gameplay mechanic. Players control a character who must lure alien creatures into holes dug within layered platforms by creating them with a joystick. Once an alien is trapped, players must then strike it to eliminate it from the playing field. Later levels require strategic alignment of multiple holes to deal with several aliens at once. The game features cooperative play for two people and places a constant pressure on the player through a limited oxygen supply that acts as a timer. Space Panic’s unusual digging mechanic would later inspire elements in other games like Lode Runner. It's part of Universal’s Cosmic series, which includes titles such as Cosmic Monsters and Cosmic Avenger. The arcade cabinet itself is notable for its colorful artwork extending around the coin door and above the monitor. The game was distributed internationally through licensing agreements with ADP Automaten in Germany and Inder in Spain.
