Gameplay

Pairs is a two-player puzzle game released in 1994 by Strata and Incredible Technologies that puts a twist on the classic memory matching concept. Players work against a timer and limited lives (represented as hearts) to uncover pairs of cards arranged in a 6x10 grid. Selecting one card reveals its image, then players must choose another hoping for a match; successful matches clear those cards from play and add time to the clock, while incorrect guesses deplete their remaining hearts. Early stages begin with some cards already face-up to offer an initial advantage. Each of the game's eight selectable women features four progressively revealing stages, complete with strategically placed "joker" cards that can dramatically clear the board. Unique visual elements are present throughout gameplay: backgrounds appear in grayscale with certain imagery initially obscured by band-aid sprites which disappear upon stage completion to unveil full color images. Completing a woman’s sequence unlocks a gallery of their associated backgrounds. Following completion of all four stages for each character, players unlock bonus rounds featuring multiple women together. The game is commonly found in bartop or cocktail cabinets, reflecting its intended placement within bar environments and is available as an adult-oriented version with mature imagery.
