OutRunners (World)
Sega • 1992

OutRunners is a fast-paced driving game for two players that revives the open-road feel of the original Out Run while adding a competitive twist. Players race through vibrant landscapes, choosing their own routes at branching intersections to reach the end of each stage before time runs out. A key feature is head-to-head racing; the first player to reach a checkpoint dictates the next location for both racers, creating dynamic and unpredictable races. Eight distinct vehicles are available, each with unique handling characteristics and transmission options – players can choose between automatic or manual gearboxes, adding another layer of control and strategy. The game also incorporates familiar music from the original Out Run, alongside new compositions, which can be changed mid-race to suit your preference. The experience is further enhanced by a point-to-point race format allowing for competitive play between up to four linked cabinets. Winning races requires skillful driving and strategic route selection to achieve high scores on the leaderboards.
