Noboranka (Japan)
Coreland / Data East Corporation • 1986

In Noboranka, players take on the role of Zippy Bug in a frantic vertical scrolling game where the objective is to ascend a massive tree and rescue a princess from insectoid kidnappers. Using an eight-way joystick, two buttons, and Sega "System 1" hardware, each player must shoot their way through waves of bug-like enemies while collecting falling fruit for points. Beware—contact with skulls results in immediate loss! A unique gameplay mechanic allows players to briefly fly upward, but doing so depletes a visible “I Love You” message at the bottom of the screen; these letters slowly regenerate over time. Throughout each level, power-ups appear, including a key granting temporary invulnerability, rings that restore lost "I Love You" letters, and hammers capable of clearing all onscreen enemies. Each stage culminates in a challenging boss encounter. Originally released in Japan by Coreland and distributed internationally by Data East Corporation, Noboranka is considered a rare title within the arcade landscape, particularly due to its unusual licensing history involving Coreland, Sega, and Data East. Outside of Japan, this frantic climbing adventure is known as Zippy Bug.
