Night Raid (V2.03J 2001/02/26 17:00)
Takumi • 2001

Night Raid is a two-player vertical scrolling shooter released in 2001 by Takumi. Players control spacecraft and utilize an eight-way joystick to navigate through abstract environments while battling unusual enemies. The game’s core mechanic revolves around collecting bonus items that fall from defeated foes; these raise a “Score Thermometer” which, when positive, multiplies your score. Letting the thermometer drop results in penalties, creating a dynamic risk/reward system as players balance aggression and item collection. Combat utilizes three buttons: one to shoot, another to unleash a wave attack, and a third for deploying bombs. A unique scoring system features three distinct leaderboards – high score, low (negative) score, and a “Near-Zero” record— demonstrating the game’s focus on varied playstyles and outcomes. Skilled players can also trigger a secret item by holding six power-ups onscreen for three seconds. Night Raid runs on Taito G-Net hardware and features a soundtrack composed by Yasushi Kaminishi, with guitar work from Masakazu Hamaguchi. A console port of the game was later released for the Sony PlayStation in 2001.
