Gameplay

NBA Jam throws players into an over-the-top basketball experience featuring digitized versions of real NBA athletes. Two teams of two compete in fast-paced matches where gravity seems optional and dunks are routinely spectacular. Forget traditional refereeing – this is a blowout of epic proportions, emphasizing acrobatic slams and exaggerated athleticism above realistic gameplay. Players control their chosen athlete using an 8-way joystick and three buttons to pass, shoot, and steal the ball from opponents. The game allows for up to four players, facilitating intense two-on-two competition. Hidden characters and special power-ups can be unlocked by inputting specific button combinations at the start of a match, adding another layer of discovery for dedicated players. NBA Jam’s unique blend of recognizable NBA stars and exaggerated action helped establish a new style of sports arcade game upon its release, quickly becoming a popular draw for arcades in 1993.
