Name That Tune (Bally, 3/31/86)
Bally/Sente • 1986

Step up to the challenge in Name That Tune, a two-player quiz game released by Bally/Sente in 1986. Based directly on the popular television show of the same name, players compete to identify familiar songs from the 1940s and 50s. The gameplay is straightforward: listen to a brief musical snippet and quickly select the correct title from multiple choices presented on screen. Simple graphics primarily feature text and colors, with minimal animation consisting of a hand playing notes on a piano keyboard. The game’s design prioritizes song selection due to hardware limitations; this results in a clean and functional interface. Two players can face off against each other, testing their musical knowledge and vying for the highest score. Name That Tune was initially released as a conversion kit intended for installation within existing Sente SAC-I arcade cabinets, giving them a distinctive metallic appearance. Despite its faithful recreation of the television format, this title proved unsuccessful in arcades during a period of declining popularity for the industry. Though upgrade chips were planned, they never materialized. A team of programmers and designers collaborated on Name That Tune, including Owen Rubin (game design) and Ed Rotberg (programming).
