Gameplay

Based on the 1988 film of the same name, Sega’s Michael Jackson's Moonwalker is a cooperative platform and scrolling fighter for up to three players. As Michael Jackson, alongside his chimpanzee Bubbles, you must battle Mr. Big’s forces in an effort to rescue children across five distinct stages, each set to iconic music from Jackson’s discography like “Bad” and "Smooth Criminal." Players navigate the levels using a joystick, defeating enemies by firing energy blasts or utilizing Dance Magic—a powerful attack that clears the screen of foes. A unique transformation mechanic allows players to briefly become the “Moonwalker,” a robotic version of Michael capable of unleashing lasers and missiles. Throughout gameplay, Bubbles appears; contact with him triggers this powerful change. Boss battles conclude each stage, requiring strategic use of abilities to progress. The game runs on Sega’s System 18 hardware and features three playable characters, differentiated by their clothing color: white, red, and black. Later versions of the game include an anti-drug message screen.
