Gameplay

Descend into subterranean chaos in Mr. Driller, a fast-paced puzzle game for two players released by Namco in 1999. As Susumu Hori, son of Dig Dug’s Taizo Hori, you must drill downwards through layers of falling blocks using a four-way joystick. Matching colored blocks causes them to disappear, creating pathways deeper into the earth—but be mindful of your air supply! Collect air capsules to replenish it, or risk running out and ending your run. The gameplay loop is simple yet intensely addictive: strategically clear blocks while managing resources and striving for high scores. Bonus points are awarded for skillful play, including collecting special Undergrounder bonuses and completing levels quickly with perfect air and life records. Originally conceived as “Dig Dug III,” Mr. Driller offers a fresh take on the classic puzzle formula, setting the stage for a successful series of games set in a future world of 20XX. This arcade version represents software release DRI3/VER.A2 for the US market and showcases Namco's System 12 hardware. While initially sidelined during development of Ridge Racer Type 4, its charm led to its official release, proving itself as a compelling challenge for puzzle game enthusiasts.
