Mr. Do!
Universal • 1982

Take on the role of Mr. Do, a circus clown, in this colorful maze game where your goal is to clear each level by either eliminating monsters or collecting all the cherries. Using a four-way joystick, players dig through soil-like tunnels, creating new paths to escape enemies and gather scattered cherries while strategically using apples to block or defeat pursuing monsters – though beware, falling apples can also harm Mr. Do himself. A unique "Powerball" helps clear obstacles, bouncing down tunnels until it returns or eliminates a monster, although its regeneration time increases with repeated use. As you progress through the game, monsters will actively dig their own paths to chase you, and special prizes appear once all monsters have emerged, triggering encounters with the Alphamonster and his henchmen. Between levels, short intermission sequences display your score and completion methods while showcasing animated versions of Mr. Do and his adversaries. Mr. Do! offers multiple ways to complete a level – by collecting all cherries, defeating all monsters, or reaching special rewards – and was an early success for Universal, inspiring a series of sequels and influencing the arcade landscape with its innovative gameplay.
