Gameplay

Mortal Kombat 4 represents a significant shift for the franchise, introducing fully three-dimensional graphics to the established fighting formula. Players choose from a roster of characters and engage in one-on-one battles using an eight-way joystick and six buttons to execute a variety of punches, kicks, and special moves. The game features a selection screen that originally included several characters who were later removed or altered during development, ultimately leading to the inclusion of Jarek as a replacement. Gameplay revolves around depleting your opponent's health bar while avoiding their attacks. Stages include interactive elements like throwable objects in Goro’s Lair and decapitated heads in The Furnace. A new feature allows players to briefly sidestep projectiles by pressing specific controls, adding another layer of strategy to the confrontations. Later revisions introduced character biographies and a “danger” indicator when health is critically low, alongside adjustments to weapon availability for certain fighters. While retaining the core Mortal Kombat experience, version 3.0 of this title signifies an evolution in both presentation and gameplay mechanics.
