Gameplay

Defend against an escalating nuclear threat in Atari’s Missile Command, a frantic two-player shooter released in 1980. As incoming missiles rain down, players use a trackball to maneuver a targeting reticle and launch anti-ballistic missiles from one of three bases – Alpha, Delta, or Omega – attempting to destroy the warheads before they reach six vulnerable cities. Later waves introduce increasingly challenging enemy tactics like smart bombs that evade traditional defenses, alongside bomber planes and satellites launching their own attacks. Success depends on quick reflexes and strategic base selection; while all bases can launch missiles, Delta Base’s projectiles travel faster and are more effective against the trickier weaponry. The game presents a constant pressure as players balance protecting cities with conserving precious missile supplies – a “LOW” warning signals when a base's ammunition dwindles. Destroyed cities can be rebuilt, but only after reaching certain score thresholds, adding another layer of urgency to the escalating conflict. Missile Command is available in both two-player and single-player cabinet configurations, with trackball size varying between models. The game’s color scheme shifts periodically, providing a visual indication of the rising tension as players strive to outmaneuver an unrelenting barrage.
