Minefield
Stern Electronics • 1983

In Minefield, you pilot a tank across a vast desert landscape, tasked with reaching and destroying an enemy fortress ninety miles distant. Stern Electronics’ 1983 shooter drops you into a relentless mission where survival depends on scavenging for missile stockpiles to arm yourself against fortified positions—requiring three hits to destroy—while constantly battling waves of approaching war machines. The game features scrolling backgrounds that create a sense of scale and immersion as the sun sets, bringing an increased challenge with nighttime attacks from robotic adversaries. The gameplay centers around maneuvering your tank across the desert floor while avoiding buried mines and utilizing an unlimited supply of heavy-duty shells for all-directional defense. As you progress through the hazardous terrain, enemy forces will attempt to halt your advance with bombs and other weaponry, demanding skillful piloting and precise firing. Successful completion of the mission earns a replacement tank every 30,000 points, alongside the opportunity to have your initials recorded on the tank commander’s roll of honor. Minefield utilizes a Zilog Z80 processor for both game logic and sound, complemented by General Instrument AY8910 chips for its audio output. The vertical screen displays a resolution of 224x256 pixels at a refresh rate of 60.61 Hz, allowing for detailed visuals as you navigate this challenging single-player ordeal.
