Midnight Resistance (World, set 1)
Data East Corporation • 1989

Step into the boots of two commando brothers in Data East’s 1989 scrolling platform shooter, Midnight Resistance. Your family has been taken captive, and it's up to you to blast your way through nine sprawling levels filled with enemy soldiers, gun emplacements, and armored vehicles. Players control their characters using an eight-way joystick, allowing for precise movement and the ability to rotate weaponry a full 360 degrees to target foes from any angle. As you progress, defeating enemies will occasionally yield red keys – essential for upgrading your arsenal at the end of each stage. These upgrades range from rapid-fire machine guns and flamethrowers to homing missiles and powerful laser bursts, all purchasable with collected keys. Strategic weapon management is key, as dropped weapons and keys can be recovered if you're quick enough after losing a life. The game’s narrative culminates in a final showdown against the formidable Crimson King. Before that battle, players have the opportunity to rescue family members held captive within the penultimate level; your ending will vary depending on how many are freed, adding an extra layer of challenge and replayability to this action-packed cooperative experience.
