Konami’s M.I.A. - Missing in Action is a fast-paced, side-scrolling action game released in 1989 for two players. As Special Forces soldiers, you must battle through enemy strongholds to rescue prisoners of war and safely escort them to an awaiting helicopter. Beginning with only a combat knife, players can find and equip powerful weapons like assault rifles, grenades, flamethrowers, and bazookas by defeating enemy troops; however, each weapon has limited ammunition. The game features six distinct stages – ranging from war-torn battlefields to jungle environments and a POW base – with the final two always being the rescue of prisoners and their escort to safety. To increase replayability, the first four stages appear in random order and can be mirrored, changing the direction of gameplay. Each level culminates in an intense firefight against waves of enemies and fortified defenses. M.I.A. builds upon the foundation laid by Konami's earlier Green Beret, introducing cooperative two-player action where both soldiers fight alongside each other to complete their mission. Successfully rescuing at least one POW allows players to progress, with escalating difficulty for subsequent playthroughs.
