Major Havoc (rev 3)
Atari • 1983
Also known as: Alpha One

Major Havoc blends fast-paced space combat with intricate maze exploration in a unique gameplay experience. Players take on the role of Major Rex Havoc, tasked with liberating humanity from the remnants of a robotic empire by destroying their fortified space stations. Each station presents two distinct challenges: first, navigate a wave of robot ships, depleting their shields before unleashing attacks; then, enter the station itself and race against dwindling oxygen to plant explosives at the reactor core and escape before detonation. The game’s vector graphics create a stark, futuristic aesthetic as you pilot your Catastrofighter through space and low-gravity environments. Navigation within each station involves solving maze-like layouts guided by red arrows, while collecting oxygen canisters keeps you alive. A Breakout mini-game appears at the start of each wave, offering chances to discover warp codes that allow players to quickly advance through levels – a risky but rewarding strategy for skilled pilots. Adding further complexity is the involvement of Mark Cerny in later development, contributing new enemy types and interactive elements to the station mazes. Major Havoc’s innovative blend of genres made it a distinctive title in the early 1980s arcade scene.
