Kaneko • 1991

Kaneko’s Magical Crystals is a cooperative maze and shooter released in early 1992 featuring two players navigating interconnected chambers to defeat waves of enemies. Players control characters who move through the environments using an eight-way joystick, utilizing buttons for firing projectiles. The game presents a vibrant visual style with a resolution of 256x224 pixels and a palette of over two thousand colors, all displayed at a refresh rate of sixty hertz. Gameplay involves strategically maneuvering through the maze-like levels while eliminating enemies that appear from various points within the environment. A team effort is essential to overcome the challenges presented by the increasingly difficult enemy patterns, with each player contributing to the collective defense and progression. The game’s sound design incorporates music composed using General Instrument AY8910 and OKI6295 chips. Magical Crystals was also licensed to Atlus for distribution. Programmers S. Igarashi, Y. Shiono, M. Satoh, and Y. Sakakura contributed to the game's development alongside a team of graphics designers and sound engineers.
