Gameplay

Flip & Flop (also known as Max-A-Flex) is a cooperative platform game released in 1983 by Exidy and First Star Software accommodating up to four players simultaneously. Players control two distinct characters—a kangaroo named Flip and an ape called Mitch—who navigate interconnected, isometric platforms via ladders. Each character faces a unique pursuer: a zookeeper chasing Flip, and a net pursuing Mitch. Gameplay involves strategically maneuvering both characters across the levels, utilizing "sticky fields" to momentarily trap their respective chasers. Falling off the edge of the playfield results in loss of life. The objective is to progress through marked areas on each stage; every five levels are punctuated by brief circus-themed sequences, with later levels introducing increased complexity and adjustments to gameplay elements such as field size and sticky field availability. Flip & Flop features a distinctive visual style built around its isometric perspective and utilizes MOS Technology and Motorola processors alongside POKEY sound chip for audio. Players use eight-way joysticks to guide their characters through the challenging, multi-player experience.
