Metal Black (World)
Taito Corporation Japan • 1991

Humanity faces extinction in Metal Black, a fast-paced, side-scrolling shooter from Taito released in 1991. Players pilot an advanced spacecraft developed using alien technology to combat invaders from the Nemesis region of space. Unlike many shooters of its time, Metal Black eschews traditional weapon power-ups; instead, players collect floating clusters of “Newalone” molecules to gradually increase their ship’s firepower and activate a devastating beam weapon. This beam provides immense destructive capability but drains energy rapidly, forcing strategic management of resources. Two players can team up for cooperative action as they navigate through challenging levels teeming with enemies. The game's unique gameplay revolves around collecting Newalone molecules; the more you gather, the stronger your weapons become, culminating in a powerful energy beam capable of obliterating almost anything it touches. Skilled players will learn to use this beam offensively and defensively, exploiting opportunities to interact with enemy beams for maximum effect. Originally intended as Gun Frontier 2, Metal Black evolved into its own distinct experience, showcasing Taito's technical prowess on the F2 system hardware. The game also marked a notable innovation by displaying the title of each stage’s music at the beginning, adding to the immersive atmosphere and contributing to a memorable arcade experience.
