Mega Zone (version L)
Konami • 1983

Navigate dangerous territory in Konami’s Mega Zone, released in 1983. Players pilot an amphibious Rocket Tank through a series of vertically scrolling levels, choosing their path carefully to avoid enemy encounters and collect power-ups that increase firepower. The game demands precision aiming as you face varied opposition depending on the route selected; vigilance is key while advancing toward the ominous “Megazone.” The ultimate objective involves confronting a massive fortress defended by giant mechanical eyeballs, which are only vulnerable during brief openings in the command tower. Two players can simultaneously control their own tanks and cooperate to clear obstacles and defeat enemies. Mega Zone utilizes a combination of Motorola and Zilog processors alongside sound chips from General Instrument to deliver both engaging gameplay and distinctive audio. Hidden within the game's graphics ROM are unused assets, including imagery reminiscent of Konami’s earlier arcade title, Pooyan. A high score of 2,228,650 points was achieved by Yashiro Oda—a testament to the challenging nature of this vertical shooter/driving experience.
