Gameplay

Maze Invaders is a two-player maze and collect game developed by Atari in 1981. Players navigate individual mazes, collecting items while avoiding unseen adversaries. The gameplay centers around strategic movement within the confined spaces of the maze to gather points and outmaneuver whatever dangers lurk within. Designed and programmed by Ed Logg, this prototype unfortunately did not progress past field testing despite its creation. Only two known examples of Maze Invaders exist today, making it a rare find for arcade enthusiasts. The game’s unusual test screens even appeared in the 1985 film Cloak and Dagger. High scores recorded during early play include names like BBM, ED, and DUG, reflecting the contributions of individuals involved in its development and testing phases. The default high score table demonstrates the potential for competitive gameplay, with scores exceeding 39,000 points achieved by players such as Brian McGhie. While short-lived, Maze Invaders offers a glimpse into Atari’s experimental design process during the early 1980s.
