Gameplay

Gaelco's Maniac Square, developed in 1992, offers a unique cooperative puzzle experience for up to two players. This prototype version presents gameplay reminiscent of Tetris, where falling blocks must be strategically arranged to clear the playing field and advance through levels. Players use an eight-way joystick to manipulate each block, aiming to create complete horizontal lines that disappear, earning points and preventing the stack from reaching the top. A digital scoreboard tracks player progress and rankings. The prototype distinguishes itself with a distinct soundtrack featuring guitar music – a stark contrast to the folk songs found in later iterations of the game. Unlike the final release, this version also includes special blocks and assistance features that impact gameplay. The screen displays multiple playing fields when two players are engaged, while single-player mode centers the action on one field. Programmed by Tomas Cepeda, Pablo Martinez, and Raul Izquierdo, with graphic design from Gerardo Oporto, Maniac Square represents an early stage in the development of what would eventually become a very different arcade title released four years later.
