Magical Spot
Universal • 1980

In Magical Spot, released in arcades beginning in 1980 from Universal, players work cooperatively to defend Earth against an invasion of scorpion-like creatures launched from a massive alien ship called Mothra. This vertical-screen shooter presents a unique challenge compared to many contemporary games; enemies require two hits to be destroyed, demanding careful aiming and strategic maneuvering. As the invaders descend, they periodically disappear and reappear amongst rows of dots on the screen, adding an element of unpredictability to the gameplay. The game's escalating difficulty comes as larvae reach the bottom of the playfield, triggering special attacks against the player’s fighter. Utilizing a two-way joystick and single fire button, players must manage their shots effectively while coordinating with a second player to maximize defense. A sequel, Magical Spot II, offered a slightly easier experience by reducing enemy health to one hit. Universal cabinets from this era are known for their elaborate artwork, and Magical Spot is no exception; its cabinet features detailed colorful designs covering nearly the entire surface. The game runs on a Zilog Z80 processor and utilizes a DAC sound chip to deliver an engaging audio experience within its 192 x 256 pixel resolution.
