Gameplay

Macross Plus is a cooperative vertical scrolling shooter released in Japan by Banpresto in 1996. Two players take control of transforming fighter jets and navigate through increasingly challenging levels filled with enemy spacecraft and fortifications. Utilizing an eight-way joystick and four buttons, players maneuver their aircraft while unleashing attacks to clear the screen and progress deeper into the game's unfolding narrative. The gameplay emphasizes coordinated teamwork as players face waves of adversaries and attempt to survive intense aerial combat encounters. Successfully completing the game unlocks a hidden ending accessible by achieving victory twice consecutively. The game’s visuals are driven by a Motorola 68EC020 processor, while its sound is handled by a Motorola 68000 processor paired with an ES5506 chip. Macross Plus builds upon earlier installments in the Super Spacefortress Macross series and features contributions from a team including producer Toshifumi Kawashima and music composer Kenichi Suzuki. The high score table, prominently displayed within the game, demonstrates the considerable skill required to achieve top rankings.
