Super Spacefortress Macross II / Chou-Jikuu Yousai Macross II
Banpresto • 1993
Also known as: Macross II

Pilots take to the skies in Super Spacefortress Macross II, a fast-paced horizontal scrolling shooter released by Banpresto in 1993. Two players can team up to battle through enemy formations and massive space fortresses, maneuvering their spacecraft with an eight-way joystick and utilizing two buttons for firing. The game builds upon the foundation of its predecessor, Super Spacefortress Macross, continuing a series that draws inspiration from the Macross anime franchise. Gameplay involves navigating intricate levels filled with challenging enemy patterns and powerful bosses. Players will encounter a vibrant color palette of over 1000 hues as they progress through three difficulty settings: Beginner, Medium, and Expert. A special version distributed to the gaming magazine GAMEST included a pause feature accessible by holding down a button, intended for capturing gameplay screenshots. Though rooted in the popular Macross universe, this arcade title was developed without direct input from some of the original creators, becoming uniquely financed by an American anime company due to its popularity with overseas audiences. The game’s soundtrack features music driven by Yamaha YM2203 and OKI6295 sound chips alongside a Zilog Z80 processor adding depth to the experience.
