Macho Mouse
Techstar • 1982

Navigate twisting mazes in Techstar’s Macho Mouse, released in 1982. Two players control heroic mice as they attempt to collect cheese scattered throughout each level while avoiding patrolling cats. Using an eight-way joystick and a single button, players maneuver their characters through the vertical playfield, strategically planning routes to gather all the cheese before the feline adversaries catch them. The game’s vibrant palette of forty colors creates a visually distinct experience on its 224x256 pixel display, refreshed at sixty hertz. Two Zilog Z80 processors work in tandem – one for gameplay and another dedicated to sound, accompanied by General Instrument AY8910 chips that generate the game’s audio. Cooperative teamwork is essential as players must coordinate their movements to outwit the cats and secure victory. Macho Mouse provides a challenging and engaging maze experience for two simultaneous players, demanding quick reflexes and careful planning in its pursuit of cheesy rewards.
