Lupin III (set 1)
Taito • 1980

Taito's Lupin III is a cooperative maze game released in 1980 for two players. Taking inspiration from the popular manga and anime series of the same name, players control Lupin and one of his companions as they navigate intricate levels filled with enemies to defeat. Using a four-way joystick and single button, players must strategically maneuver through the environments while avoiding obstacles and dispatching foes using a magical attack. The game’s design reflects the character's connection to Arsene Lupin, a literary thief whose legacy informs the series’ narrative. Early versions released outside of Japan sometimes altered the protagonist’s name due to copyright considerations surrounding the original character. This arcade version was designed for simultaneous two-player action, allowing friends to team up and tackle challenges together. A cocktail table variant of Lupin III, known as "T.T Lupin III" in Japan, was also produced, providing an alternative play configuration. The game’s release coincided with the peak popularity of the Lupin III franchise, capitalizing on the established fan base for this action-packed maze adventure.
