Gameplay

Liberator puts you in command of a coordinated fleet tasked with dismantling enemy bases orbiting a central planet. Utilizing a unique trackball control scheme, players maneuver a cursor to direct missile fire from one of four stationed starships; a shield button provides temporary protection against incoming attacks, though the shield's strength is shared across all vessels. Early levels begin with an initial evasion stage as you navigate through space dodging ramming spacecraft before transitioning to the core gameplay loop of destroying bases and satellites while contending with increasingly intelligent enemy defenses that can manipulate the planet’s rotation to avoid your fire. The game presents a strategic challenge, demanding careful resource management of shields and precise targeting to overcome the varied threats. Destroying missile bases is paramount to progressing through the levels, but be wary of flying saucers whose powerful lasers cannot be blocked. Bonus ships are awarded throughout gameplay, adding reinforcements for later stages. Though relatively obscure with only 762 arcade machines produced, Liberator offers a distinctive twist on the classic space shooter formula.
