Liberation
Data East Corporation • 1984
Also known as: Dual Assault

Data East’s Liberation, released in Japan in late 1984, is a cooperative vertical scrolling shooter for two players. As pilots in futuristic aircraft, you navigate through increasingly challenging environments while battling waves of enemy forces. Movement is controlled with an eight-way joystick, and buttons fire weaponry to destroy approaching threats and clear a path forward. The game presents a relentless stream of action as players work together to advance through the levels, utilizing coordinated attacks to overcome obstacles. Liberation features distinct visuals and audio generated by its custom hardware and sound chips, creating an immersive experience for both players. A version of this game was later distributed in the United States under the name “Dual Assault.” A bootleg version produced by Life System Seoul followed shortly after the original release, featuring a modified processor within its system board. The game’s development team included I. Fushiki, D. Kohama, Y. Ohba and Kenji Nishikawa.
