Gameplay

Konami’s Lightning Fighters is a two-player vertical scrolling shooter released in North America in 1990. Players pilot advanced aircraft through increasingly challenging levels filled with enemy fighters and defensive installations. The game presents a cooperative experience where both players navigate the skies, battling waves of adversaries to progress towards a final objective. Gameplay distinguishes itself based on player count. Starting a single-player session defaults to two-player rules: each life begins with a bomb, and players respawn at their last location upon defeat. A second player can join an ongoing game at any time, even if initially started as a solo effort. The presence of certain power-ups is also dependent on the number of players engaged; some are exclusive to single-player games while others appear only when two players are participating. Lightning Fighters is actually an export version of the earlier Japanese title Trigon, and utilizes shared game mechanics between the two releases. While the original Japanese release featured differing rules based on initial player count, the North American version maintains a consistent two-player dynamic throughout gameplay regardless of how it’s initially started.
