Lemmings (US prototype)
Data East USA • 1991

Data East USA’s 1991 prototype arcade game, Lemmings, brings the popular puzzle challenge to a two-player cabinet. Players must strategically assign tasks to groups of lemmings – designating some to dig, climb, build, block, bash, float, or mine—to guide them safely through increasingly complex levels. The default behavior for these small creatures is to mindlessly walk forward, often towards perilous drops and other dangers, so player intervention is essential for survival. The game presents a series of stages across multiple difficulty tiers, requiring quick thinking and careful planning to prevent the lemmings from meeting untimely ends. A trackball controls the selection of individual lemmings and their assigned actions, demanding precision as players attempt to shepherd their charges towards safety. The arcade version established a fast-forward feature later integrated into home versions, significantly influencing how fans experience the game today. Notably, US cocktail cabinet editions incorporate a unique "Winners Don't Use Drugs" screen during gameplay, setting them apart from other releases. Developed by Psygnosis, Lemmings offered a novel and engaging cooperative puzzle experience for two players at a time.
