Lode Runner (set 1)
Irem (licensed from Broderbund) • 1984

Originally released for the Apple II computer, Irem’s arcade adaptation of Lode Runner challenges players to navigate maze-like levels and collect gold while avoiding robotic guards known as Bungelings. Using an eight-way joystick, you'll dig tunnels through stone blocks to create pathways and drop enemies into pits, strategically maneuvering them or outrunning them entirely. The cooperative two-player mode allows for teamwork – or friendly competition – as you race against the clock to gather all the treasure. A key mechanic involves uncovering hidden monsters within the levels; these creatures can be manipulated to either hinder your progress or, if trapped cleverly, provide a valuable point bonus. Mastering timing and spatial awareness is crucial for success, as quick thinking and precise movements are needed to avoid capture and maximize your score across increasingly complex stages. Numerous bonuses await skilled players who complete levels quickly or manage to evade all enemies and traps.
