Gameplay

Originally released in Japan in late 1987, Kozure Ookami is a side-scrolling action game from Nichibutsu that blends fighting and shooter elements. Players control characters inspired by the 'Lone Wolf and Cub' manga, navigating through a series of stages with an emphasis on close-quarters combat. The gameplay involves utilizing attacks to defeat enemies while also incorporating some shooting mechanics. A notable feature is the inclusion of a baby carriage cannon, adding a unique offensive capability to the action. Two players can participate simultaneously, cooperating as they progress through the game's challenges. Movement utilizes an eight-way joystick, and simple controls allow for both attacking and jumping – achieved by pressing both attack and block buttons at once. Strategic gameplay involves interacting with the environment; breaking certain background elements reveals power-ups to aid in the fight against increasingly difficult opponents. The game’s soundtrack was later released on a limited edition album in early 1991, showcasing the work of composer Kenji Yoshida. Kozure Ookami provides a distinct arcade experience with its unusual combination of genres and distinctive visual style.
