Gameplay

The King of Fighters '97 pits two players against each other in intense one-on-one fighting matches across a sprawling tournament bracket. Nine teams of three characters battle to confront and defeat the sinister Orochi and those influenced by his power, resulting in a roster of twenty-nine selectable fighters. Players choose from a diverse cast, utilizing four buttons per character to execute a variety of punches, kicks, and special moves in fast-paced versus battles. The game’s stages incorporate references to other SNK titles, with familiar faces appearing as background cameos within the Kowloon setting, including characters from Top Hunter, Art of Fighting, and Fatal Fury. Team compositions are strategically important; three specific fighters hold a unique connection to an ancient legend, representing elements crucial to overcoming Orochi's threat. Beyond the core fighting mechanics, The King of Fighters '97 incorporates character-specific quirks and animations, such as Choi Bounge’s unusual throw and Yashiro Nanakase’s flamboyant personality, adding depth and humor to the competitive experience. Music from previous SNK games also makes an appearance throughout the soundtrack.
