The King of Fighters '96 (NGM-214)
SNK • 1996

The King of Fighters '96 pits two players against each other in fast-paced, team-based fighting action. This installment brings together a massive roster of twenty-seven characters drawn from SNK’s previous games, all vying to defeat the powerful Goenitz and his formidable allies. Players select three fighters per team and battle through a series of matches, with character interactions occasionally triggering unique phrases or poses – particularly noticeable during fights between Kyo and Iori, Terry and Geese, or Ralf and Clark. Gameplay revolves around classic fighting game mechanics; utilizing four buttons—punch and kick for both weak and strong attacks—to execute combos and special moves. A redesigned stance for Ryo Sakazaki aimed to distance him from comparisons to other popular characters while retaining his core move set. The Neo-Geo MVS hardware delivers vibrant visuals and tight controls, showcasing the distinct personalities of each fighter as they clash in intense battles. Beyond the standard tournament format, certain team combinations unlock special endings, offering a glimpse into additional storylines and character interactions. While many planned moves for individual fighters didn't make it into the final game, their absence hints at an even more expansive fighting experience originally envisioned by the developers. The inclusion of characters like Leona, Mature, and Vice adds layers to the narrative and expands upon the established world of SNK’s fighting games.
