Gameplay

Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi is a vertically scrolling shooter for two players, developed by Cave and published under license by AMI in 2003. Set in a near-future world grappling with rising sea levels and political conflict, the game places you in control of helicopters battling against the EVAC corporation after its illicit weapons trading is exposed. Players maneuver their craft through intense stages filled with enemy fire and challenging boss encounters, utilizing both standard weaponry and a unique “Lock-Shot” system which allows for precise targeting and close-range attacks to maximize scoring opportunities. The Lock-Shot mechanic involves slowing the helicopter’s movement while locking onto multiple targets simultaneously, demanding careful positioning and timing to overcome increasingly difficult enemies. A complex scoring system rewards aggressive play near opponents but also introduces a risk/reward element tied to chip collection and multiplier management which deplete with lock-shot usage and death. Achieving specific conditions unlocks special game modes that dramatically alter the gameplay and challenge players further. Beyond the standard experience, mastering Ketsui involves understanding its looping systems – including a challenging "URA" loop requiring flawless play – and precise boss form change timings, all while vying for high scores alongside a second player.
