Karnov (US, rev 6)
Data East USA • 1987

Karnov is a platform and scrolling shooter released in North America by Data East USA in 1987. Players control Karnov, a wrestler with incredible strength and grappling abilities, as he navigates through various environments battling robotic enemies. Gameplay involves jumping across platforms, using Karnov’s powerful punches to defeat foes, and deploying special weapons like boomerangs and flames to clear obstacles. Two players can team up for cooperative action against the onscreen threats. This North American version features several differences from its Japanese counterpart, including a greater number of enemies and unique additions such as an ostrich appearing in the first level and red serpents throughout gameplay. A mechanic designed to encourage quicker play is present; if players linger too long, they will be targeted by invincible plants and red serpents when using ladders. Furthermore, after special weapons are depleted, Karnov reverts to a triple-fire attack instead of returning to a single-fire pattern as seen in the original Japanese release. Item placements also vary between versions, adding some unpredictability to each playthrough.
