Karate Blazers (World, set 1)
Video System Co. • 1991
Also known as: Toushin Blazers

Karate Blazers is a fast-paced fighting game released in 1991 by Video System Co., designed for up to four players simultaneously. Players choose from one of four characters—Mark, Glen, Akira, and Gil—each possessing unique special attacks alongside standard punches and kicks. The gameplay unfolds across horizontally scrolling stages filled with numerous enemies that must be defeated as you progress through the levels. Drawing inspiration from classics like Final Fight, Karate Blazers features frenetic action and a large number of on-screen opponents at times. Though not groundbreaking in concept, it delivers straightforward, energetic combat and well-animated visuals. A notable detail for fans of cinema is that the boss character encountered in the third stage appears to be inspired by Yusaku Matsuda's portrayal of Sato from Ridley Scott’s film Black Rain. Controlling your chosen fighter with an eight-way joystick and four buttons, players will battle through a variety of environments while utilizing each character’s individual special moves—powerful attacks that damage multiple enemies but come at the cost of some health.
