Jump Bug
Hoei (Rock-Ola license) • 1981

Take the wheel in Jump Bug, a cooperative platform game released in 1981 by Hoei under license from Rock-Ola. Players control Volkswagen Beetles as they navigate eight distinct scrolling environments, collecting money and jewels along the way. Using an 8-way joystick and single button, players must skillfully jump their vehicles to overcome obstacles while also deciding whether to shoot or avoid a variety of enemies encountered on each level. The game’s vibrant graphics are powered by a Zilog Z80 processor and accompanied by sound from a General Instrument AY8910 chip, creating an engaging audiovisual experience for up to two players simultaneously. Originally developed by Alpha Denshi with support from Hoei International, Jump Bug offered a unique blend of action and platforming that proved popular in arcades during its initial release in December 1981. While initially licensed by Rock-Ola, bootleg versions featuring Sega copyright markings also appeared, adding to the game’s interesting development history. Allen Rager currently holds the high score record for Jump Bug, demonstrating the skill and precision required to master this unusual arcade adventure.
