Gameplay

Journey is a cooperative maze game for two players released in 1983 by Bally Midway, where you guide a band of musicians through perilous environments to retrieve their instruments. Each stage begins with a brief animated sequence featuring the Scarab spacecraft transporting the performers – Steve Perry, Ross Valory, Jonathan Cain, Neal Schon, and Steve Smith – towards a planet containing one member’s missing instrument. Players then control each musician individually, navigating obstacles unique to their respective planets; for example, Steve Perry must dodge turnstiles while retrieving his microphone, whereas Neal Schon pilots a jetpack through caverns to recover his guitar. Once all instruments are recovered, the band performs "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)," defending themselves from an excited crowd as Herbie, the bouncer, controlled by the player, attempts to hold them back. Failure to protect the performers results in restarting the process with a new, more challenging set of obstacles. Players utilize an eight-way joystick and fire buttons to maneuver both the Scarab and the individual musicians, avoiding hazards while collecting instruments and fending off distractions. Digitized images of Journey band members were incorporated into the game’s visuals, alongside recognizable music from their catalog like "Chain Reaction" and "Don't Stop Believin'." The game ends when all performers are eliminated, signaling a “Game Over” screen.
