Mahjong Block Jongbou (Japan)
SNK • 1987

Players control paddles at the bottom of the screen in Mahjong Block Jongbou, a two-player ball and paddle game released by SNK in 1987. The objective is to eliminate blocks arranged at the top by bouncing a ball into them; each player is responsible for their own paddle and must work independently, as there’s no cooperative play. Successfully hitting a block causes it to disappear, gradually clearing space while also increasing the game's difficulty. The gameplay bears resemblance to games like Breakout, but with a distinctly Japanese aesthetic inspired by Mahjong tiles forming the blocks. Two players compete simultaneously on separate areas of the screen, each attempting to clear their own set of blocks and prevent the ball from dropping past their paddle. Controls are simple: each player uses a dial to adjust their paddle's position. Mahjong Block Jongbou features sound generated by a Zilog Z80 processor paired with a General Instrument AY8910 chip, creating the audio experience for this competitive arcade challenge. A version of the game was later released for the Nintendo Famicom in 1987 under the title Jongbou [Model KAC-JB].
