Joe & Mac Returns is a cooperative platform game released in 1994 by Data East Corporation. Following up on the earlier Caveman Ninja, this sequel departs from its predecessor's side-scrolling action to offer a single-screen experience reminiscent of titles like Snow Bros. Players control either Joe or Mac, using an eight-way joystick and two buttons to jump and attack with a club against waves of enemies. The gameplay revolves around clearing each stage of prehistoric creatures by strategically utilizing jumps and attacks while avoiding hazards. Successfully defeating all the foes in a level transports the players to the next challenge; however, an earlier version contained a bug that could prevent progression if a power-up was obtained at an inopportune moment – this issue was corrected in later revisions. This two-player game provides a frantic and accessible experience for those who enjoy cooperative platforming action. It is installment number four within the Tatakae Genshijin series, which began with Joe & Mac in 1991.
